Early 2010 Talent Management Trends
Dr. Chris Wright, President/CEO

Get out of the gate early: Take the pulse of your workforce to identify, address and overcome critical challenges.

A recently published study by Harris, Rothenberg International (HRI) called “The Uncertainty and Change Report: Thriving in our Challenging Times” examined the toll the current economic environment has had on employee morale in the workplace. The top five job related concerns cited in the study were poor concentration, workplace dissatisfaction, conflict with a manager or supervisor, declining performance and career concerns. Understanding the challenges and concerns employees are facing is important when times are good, but absolutely critical when times are tough. A brief and well crafted Employee Engagement survey can be an easy way to take the pulse of your workforce and sends the message to employees that their input and feedback is valued. By understanding employee needs and their challenges, your company can work quickly to address and overcome these challenges to help ensure 2010 is a successful year.

Finding the best talent to fill critical positions a challenge in 2010.

Several studies predict that companies will have difficulty staffing critical positions and identifying candidates who meet specific talent needs. Studies by Spherion and HRI are predicting an uptick in hiring in 2010, but both reports suggest that companies will have a hard time finding talent. That may seem hard to believe in a time when unemployment is high, but both reports suggest that the challenge is not just finding “a person” for a vacancy, but rather finding “the best person” for the position. The market for top talent continues to be competitive and companies will need to get creative in their employment branding and recruiting strategies and carefully evaluate candidates to ensure that they are hiring the best talent. A comprehensive and cost-effective selection process should include skills testing to ensure candidates have the required knowledge and skills and behavioral assessments to ensure candidates are a good fit for the job and company culture. High unemployment means companies will see more resumes and have a more difficult time filtering the candidate pool to find the best talent. Behaviorally based interviews can also help improve successful hires by 50% compared to traditional interviews. Finally, the HRI report suggests that the competitive market will force companies to focus heavily on retention of their best and brightest to prevent other companies from stealing away top talent.
